Practicum in Clinical and Community Settings Course

Practicum in Clinical and Community Settings Course

Welcome to the Spring 2020 Practicum in Clinical and Community Settings Information Page!

The Practicum in Clinical and Community Settings is a 6-credit capstone experience for Psychology majors offered in the Fall (441/441a) and Spring (442/442a). Students in this course complete an 8-10 hour per week practicum placement with a wide range of community partner organizations providing mental health support services in schools, outpatient and residential treatment programs, groups homes, hospitals, and other human service agencies.

Students also attend a weekly seminar that serves as both group supervision for the practicum placements and as a space to discuss readings and develop important skills for mental health care providers. PSY 210 or PSY 326 and PSY 335 are pre-requisites for this class. Professors Gomez, Hamlett, and Zakriski teach this course. Students may take one semester or both (recommended).

Check out our videos below for testimonials from the PSY 442/442A class of Spring 2020. These students had the unusual experience of doing in-person placements in the first half of the semester at:

Safe Futures (Margaret); Waterford Country School (Conor and Sophie); Noank Community Support Services/Gray Farm House (Susie); L+M Hospital Child Life (Madison); and CarePlus Groton (Hana)

And then remote practicum placements with online mental health support services:

7 Cups (Hana, Conor, Sophie, Madison); Crisis Textline (Margaret, Susie) - Hana and Margaret discuss these online practicum experiences in their videos. See coverage of our remote practicum work on the Conn webpage.

We hope you enjoy hearing about these students’ experiences in the Practicum in Clinical and Community Settings course! Please email Professor Zakriski (alzak@conncoll.edu) or Professor Gomez (jgomez2@conncoll.edu) if you have questions or if you are interested in enrolling in PSY 441/441a for Fall 2020 or PSY 442/442a for Spring 20201.

We look forward to hearing from you!
